It’s officially summer, and you know what that means: No more pencils, no more books! Wait…no more books?! We don’t like the sound of that. A summer away from books leads to the summer slide. When children do not read over the summer, they lose three months worth of reading skills, which means teachers must spend the first three months of the new school year getting kids back to where they were at the end of the previous school year. The spend precious classroom time relearning old skills when they could be learning new knowledge!
How do we defeat the summer slide? It’s easy…by reading! And public libraries have a theme for their summer reading programs guaranteed to get every kid excited to visit the library and read: superheroes!
If you’re in the Eugene Area, visit a branch of the Eugene Public Library, and head to one of these superheroic events (you’ll find even more on their website):
Kelly Terwilliger will be talking about little heroes who made a big difference. She will be at the Downtown Library on June 30th at 1:00 and 3:00, the Bethel Library on July 1st at 3:00, and the Sheldon Library on July 2nd at 3:00.
Play with electricity at the Downtown Library on July 7th at 1:00 and 3:00, the Bethel Library on July 8th at 3:00, and the Sheldon Library on July 9th at 3:00.
Draw superheroes with Marianne Walker at the Downtown Library on July 14th at 1:00 and 3:00, the Bethel Library on July 15th at 3:00, and the Sheldon Library on July 16th at 3:00.
And if you pop into your local Duck Store, be sure to crack open one of these powerful reads:
